Long-term use of laxatives should be avoided, as using them for more than 7 days may lead to impaired intestinal function and the development of addiction. If you need to use laxatives every day, consult your doctor about the cause of constipation. Preparations made from buckthorn bark and senna leaves should only be used if the therapeutic effect cannot be achieved by changing the diet or using agents that soften the stool. Patients taking cardiac glycosides, antiarrhythmic drugs, drugs that prolong the QT interval, diuretics, adrenocorticosteroids or products containing licorice root should consult a doctor before using senna leaf and buckthorn bark.Like all laxatives, buckthorn bark and senna leaf should not be used by patients suffering from fecal impaction, undiagnosed, acute or persistent digestive system problems, e.g. abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, unless the doctor advises otherwise. These symptoms may be a sign of a potential or existing intestinal obstruction. When using buckthorn bark and senna leaf in incontinent patients, clothing or personal hygiene products should be changed more frequently to reduce skin contact with fecal matter. In patients with renal impairment, use of the product may cause electrolyte imbalance. The product is not recommended for use in patients with achlorhydria (acidity), liver disease, gallstones, cholangitis and other biliary diseases. Patients with gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn) should avoid using peppermint leaf products due to the possibility of worsening heartburn. Patients with gallstones and other biliary tract diseases should be especially careful when using peppermint leaf products. If symptoms worsen while using the medicinal product, consult a doctor or pharmacist.
