Long-term use of laxatives should be avoided, as using them for more than 7 days may lead to impaired intestinal function and dependence on these drugs. If you need to use laxatives daily, the cause of constipation should be investigated. Senna leaf preparations should be used only if the therapeutic effect cannot be achieved by changing the diet or using agents that soften the stool. Patients taking cardiac glycosides, antiarrhythmic drugs, drugs causing QT prolongation, diuretics,adrenocorticosteroids or products containing licorice root should consult a doctor before using senna leaves. Like all laxatives, senna leaves should not be used by patients suffering from fecal impaction or undiagnosed, acute or persistent digestive system problems, e.g. abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, unless the doctor advises otherwise. These symptoms may indicate a potential or existing intestinal obstruction. In patients with renal impairment, the use of senna leaf products may cause electrolyte imbalance. When using senna leaves on people who are incontinent, clothing or personal hygiene products should be changed more frequently to reduce skin contact with feces. If symptoms worsen while using the medicinal product, consult a doctor or pharmacist.
