OTC drug

 

Composition: liquid paraffin (Paraffinum Liquidum).

Indications: A laxative used in constipation, as well as externally for rubbing the skin.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to liquid paraffin. Abdominal pain of unknown cause and acute inflammation of the digestive tract, e.g. appendicitis. Children and pregnant women should not be given the medicine orally without consulting a doctor.

Dosage: On the skin: in adults and children, rub the skin with a small amount of the preparation as needed. By mouth: unless your doctor tells you otherwise: adults - usually at bedtime

15-30 ml orally (equivalent to 1-2 tablespoons).

The laxative effect usually occurs after 6-10 hours.

Interactions: paraffin used orally may interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, i.e. A, D, E and K, and concurrently administered oral medications.

Side effects:

When applied to the skin, it has not been reported so far.

Oral: may cause anal pruritus, paraffin leakage from the anus is often observed. Long-term and inconsistent use of the drug may lead to water and electrolyte balance disorders and secondary constipation.Small amounts of liquid paraffin may accumulate in the lymph nodes, causing inflammation.

Mechanism of action: The drug softens the feces, making defecation easier, but does not irritate the intestines. . After oral administration, it reduces the absorption of water and coats the intestinal mucosa, which softens the feces, making defecation easier. Liquid paraffin is not absorbed from the digestive tract. The laxative effect occurs a few hours (6–10 h) after use.
