Xylogel for children should not be used in children under 3 years of age. Xylogel 0.1% should not be used in children under 12 years of age. Xylogel for children or Xylogel 0.1%, like other sympathomimetics, should be administered with particular caution to patients with hypersensitivity to adrenomimetic substances, manifested by insomnia, dizziness, tremor, cardiac arrhythmias and increased blood pressure. Patients with long QT syndrome treated with xylometazoline may be at increased risk of severe ventricular arrhythmias. The product should not be used in patients with chronic or vasomotor rhinitis,as they tend to use it for longer than 5 days. Using the product for a longer period than recommended may lead to secondary vasodilation and, consequently, to secondary drug-induced rhinitis medicamentosa. The cause of this condition is most likely the inhibition of norepinephrine release from nerve endings by stimulation of presynaptic alpha2 receptors. Use with caution in patients with hypertension, angina pectoris and other cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, angle-closure glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia, and hyperthyroidism. Doses higher than recommended should not be used, especially in children and the elderly. Xylogel for children or Xylogel 0.1% should not be administered during treatment with monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants. The product contains 0.1 mg of benzalkonium chloride in each gram of gel. Benzalkonium chloride may cause irritation or swelling of the nasal mucosa, especially if used for a long time.
